A delegation from the Biafran Alliance visited Canberra yesterday calling for support in their campaign for their people's freedom.
They delivered a letter and petition to Parliament, the office of Prime Minister Julia Gillard, and a host of embassies in the capital.
Biafra has struggled for decades to establish independence from Nigeria, dating back to the 1960s when it declared its self-determination and seceded in 1967.
During its short independence, Biafra became the target of a civil war which forced it to remain in Nigeria. Alliance spokesman Ogu Okeziepro said: ''We are trying to raise awareness that our people are not free and they are still being persecuted.
''People here need to know what is happening in Nigeria. We want help. We want Australia and other countries to come to our aid.''
In 1970 Biafra surrendered to become part of Nigeria again.
